my boss isnt stiffing me on tips. people like you are.
If you are not satisfied with your job, you can look for another restaurant to work at that has a different type of clientele or you can look for another line of work.
Also, make sure your frustration isn't coming out in your attitude. You aren't doing your customers a favor by serving them. You are doing your job. They are doing you the favor by ensuring that the restaurant stays open.
Wow, words of sanity and wisdom in this community. Who would've thought?
It's just one more reason the industry has to revise how the employees are paid. That way we can bring back the reason why we tipped in the first place - for good service.
Nowadays, we're expected to tip even for shitty service.
Definitely agreed.. it seems like these days, I very rarely get service that deserves a 20% tip. I've definitely worked enough service jobs to know that whether or not you're having a shitty day, or hate your job, or whatever your problem is, you're expected to put on a smile and be as helpful and attentive as possible (even when half of your customers will treat you like a lower life form). If a waiter or waitress isn't doing that for me, then they should expect that to be reflected in the tip.
how does it feel when ur robbing someone of their cash???
Ask those three black kids under the Girard Ave Bridge.
I kid! I kid!
(you people are so topical)
Good Service = Good Tip
Bad Service = Tip
Horrible Service = $1
If your consistently getting stiffed or paid shitty tips, take it up with your boss, not some random LJ group.
FyI its not illegal amounts of money, its shitty money.
i just think philly is not so nice about tipping. many other places regularly tip at 20 or above. philly is like 15 usually and some people never tip at all. it seems this city is slow at learning how things work.
mods ban this person from the community her icon is hurting my head and i dunno what the FUCK shes sayin
errbody in da club gettin tipsy
...and not tipping 20%. OH TEH HORROR.
"i always give amazing service."
Where can I obtain some of this "service" and for what fee? :|

if you are broke do not come to my restaurant and have me do things like fill your water bring your meals out hot and take orders down for the kitchen.
What if I was just sucker punched in the jaw by a minority on Kelly Drive???
on the one hand, i hope the OP's attitude isn't what's causing the low tippage (she says it's not, so i'll assume for now that's true).
on the other hand, when i worked as a bartender, i saw the same thing happen to me and my co-workers (and i worked in a nice restaurant). it's amazing that someone could sit at a nice bar and throw back drinks for 4 hours, spend all of his money on his drinks so there was a $1 tip left for me at the end of the night, and actually have the nerve afterwards to ask me out. blecch. i see it all the time when i go out to eat -- groups who all pitch in to pay the bill with cash, but didn't bring enough to cover a decent tip as well and are too cheap to bust out a credit card to make up the difference. if the service stinks, that's one thing... but being cheap is another.
no, it really isnt. im just venting here.
omg groups are the worst. they give you like a huge pile of ones and fives that sometimes doesnt even cover the bill. drunk fucks cant do math just put it on your visa and give me a fair tip (20+).
I've worked in the service industry and I totally know how you feel.
Vent away, chica.
glad to see someone understands. i get the feeling that many here are justifying giving low tips when they dont know how hard the work is.
Vent over on waitingtables
. Loads of people will understand exactly what you're talking about. And yes, Philly does under-tip as opposed to NYC and Boston.
Philadelphia's cost of living is far below NYC and Boston.
You are 100% correct to bitch.
My lunch the other day was 7.44 cents and I tipped my waiter 8 dollars. Good tippers are out there. However, your rant and your backlash comments to other people in the community were immature, rude and absolutely pathetic.
"if you are broke do not come to my restaurant and have me do things like fill your water bring your meals out hot and take orders down for the kitchen."
"if you cant give a 20% tip dont come to my restaurant. thats how the culture works and poor people really can just eat at home."
Listen to yourself. YOU LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA. Were you not aware of the socioeconomic situation when you came here? Don't be so young-minded and hateful. Find a new job, and try andlearn how to express an idea or feeling without sounding like a 15 year old princess.
IAWTC and would like to add please get out of my state and go back to NY. Tips are better there, right?
